Trends • Lone globetrotters are setting their own pace and enjoying solitary relaxation, introspection, and personal freedom.
Until recently, the thought of solo travel conjured up images of singles cruises and packaged tours for the retirement set. Fortunately, that’s all beginning to change as more people opt to hit the road alone. Singles now account for 27 percent of all travelers and in recent years, roughly eleven percent of leisure travelers have vacationed alone. Those numbers are on the rise and travel companies, spas and resorts are all rushing to meet the demand by creating “solo-cation” packages and itineraries that cater to the unaccompanied traveler. Magnum photos
Magnum Photos is a co-operative owned and run by its members/photographers. They meet once a year during the last weekend in June to discuss the organisation's affairs. One day of the meeting is set aside for looking at and voting on potential new members' portfolios. Successful applicants will be invited to become a "Nominee Member", a category of membership which presents an opportunity for Magnum and the individual to get to know each other. At this stage there are no binding commitments on either side. In 2007 three new nominee members were accepted. Read more at Magnum Photos

When Getty transferred Media Vast's freelance contracts, it made an error in some cases - awarding photographers a higher percentage of their photos' sales revenue. After Getty was alerted, it wrote to the affected photographers, informing them the money would be repaid at a rate of 50 per cent of freelances' future fees - on top of Getty's existing cut. "It used to be that photo agencies only represented top talent, regardless of quantity. The content provided was never available elsewhere, and clients were guaranteed a certain level of quality. These days, everyone is representing just about everyone else, and most content can be found elsewhere. A search on any of these mega-sites returns a hefty volume of images, hoping that the customer will find the right one somewhere in the pack. No effort is made to separate out the better images. Creativity is trumped by productivity. A photographer producing more has more chance of being sold than one who has great talent." Read more at Black Star RISING

Editorial photos meet the wishes of the editor of a magazine, book, or newspaper, and/or, a photo researcher, but first and foremost the photo meets the wishes of the photographer. Commercial stock photos can be designed and produced by the photographer, but are still under the dictates of having to conform to “what sells.” Read more at Rohn Engh's PhotoStockNOTES
